FAQ

What are cosmeceuticals?

Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that have bioactive ingredients that benefit your skin, giving them the combined benefits of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The Collagener8® range are all of cosmeceutical grade, using safe bioactive ingredients and cosmetic ingredients that have taken over a decade to develop, to help give you the best possible results.

What are moisturisers and how do they work?

The main function of your skin is to act as a barrier to protect your underlying tissues from desiccation, infection, mechanical stress and chemical irritation.

Water from deeper tissues and epidermal layers moves upwards to hydrate your upper epidermal cell layers, this water then being lost to the environment through evaporation (trans-epidermal water loss). Epidermal water content is essential in maintaining the efficient function of your skin. Problems with this retention of water and hydration can cause impairment in the structure and function of your skin and lead to various problems forms of dermatitis.

Moisturisers work in a number of ways to help keep your skin hydrated so that it functions well and looks great.

The first way in which moisturisers work is through their occlusive action which creates a barrier that reduces trans-epidermal water loss and thus retains moisture in your skin. The occlusive action of moisturisers are assisted by emollients which also help seal moisture into your skin.

The second mechanism through which moisturisers work is through their humectant action. Humectants draw water from the surrounding environment into your skin to help keep it hydrated.

The Collagener8® range use only the best occlusive and humectant ingredients. Our team have conducted extensive research to ensure that all our moisturisers minimise pore blockage and maintain optimum hydration to help you maintain healthy, hydrated great looking skin.

What are serums and how do they work?

Facial serums are light easily absorbed oil and/or water based products that normally contain concentrated active ingredients that can easily penetrate to deeper layers of your skin, thus having the capability to act on the cells that are involved in the biosynthesis of your skin's building blocks and therefore being of greater benefit in addressing aging and other skin concerns (dependent on the serum being used and the constituent active ingredients).

Should I be using Vitamin C in my skincare routine?

Everyone should be using vitamin C in their skincare! Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is vital in your skincare regime.

The scientific research shows that using vitamin C in your daily skincare has profound benefits, including:

  • anti-aging effects by increasing the production of collagen, stabilising collagen fibres, reducing collagen degradation and protecting against photoaging.
  • antioxidant effect, reducing the oxidative damage caused by free radicals and harmful chemicals in the skin.
  • photoprotection (protecting against the damage caused by sunlight) by reducing ultraviolet-induced immunosuppresion, photocarcinogenesis and photoaging.
  • reducing pigmentation by reducing the production of the pigment forming chemical, melanin.

How do I use Vitamin C in my skincare routine?

The benefits of vitamin C in your skincare are so profound that everyone should be using it. For maximal benefit you should use a vitamin C serum as well as a vitamin C moisturiser.

Like most serums, the vitamin C serum should be used first on freshly cleansed and dry skin, to maximise the penetration and absorption of vitamin C and other active ingredients. Our Collagener8 Vitamin C+E Ferulic Pro-Collagen Facial Serum is exceptionally effective and dependent on your skin type, dryness and extent of damage we recommend carefully applying between 8 and 12 drops directly to your skin, using the supplied dropper, avoiding the eyes, and massaging gently. Following the application of serum, to maintain moisture and prolong the sustained release of vitamin C and active ingredients, we recommend the use of Collagener8 Vitamin C+E Pro-Collagen Facial Moisturiser, applying as required, dependent on skin type, dryness and extent of damage, again, avoiding the eye area.

If the vitamin C products are being used during the day, we always recommend the use of sun factor on top.

Whilst our vitamin C products can be used both day and night, your skin will derive greater benefits if you alternate between vitamin C products during the day and retinol products during the night. It is important to note that we do not recommend the use of retinol products during the day, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Should I be using Retinol in my skincare routine?

Similar to vitamin C we recommend that everyone should be using retinol, but with the caveats that firstly, you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, secondly, that retinol is only used at night and, thirdly, that a safe form of retinol is used, such as retinyl acetate, as used in the Collagener8® range.

Scientific research shows that retinol compounds are important in:

  • renewing epidermal cells.
  • acting as UV filters.
  • preventing oxidative stress.
  • controlling cutaneous bacterial flora.
  • improving skin ageing and photo-ageing.

The benefits of retinol in your skincare are so profound that everyone should be using it. For maximal benefit you should use a retinol serum as well as a retinol night cream moisturiser.

Like most serums, the retinol serum should be used first on freshly cleansed and dry skin, to maximise the penetration and absorption of retinol and other active ingredients. Our Collagener8 Retinol Facial Night Serum is exceptionally effective and dependent on your skin type and extent of damage we recommend carefully applying between 8 and 12 drops directly to your skin, using the supplied dropper, avoiding the eyes, and massaging gently. Following the application of serum, to maintain moisture and prolong the sustained release of retinol and active ingredients, we recommend the use of Collagener8 Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid Facial Night Cream , applying as required, dependent on skin type, dryness and extent of damage, again, avoiding the eye area.

We recommend that retinol products are only used at night; for maximum benefits we recommend the use of a vitamin C serum and moisturiser during the day, together with sun factor on top. It is important to note that we do not recommend the use of retinol products during the day, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How do I use vitamin C in conjunction with retinol?

Whilst our vitamin C products can be used both day and night, your skin will derive greater benefits if you alternate between vitamin C products during the day (in conjunction with sun factor) and retinol products during the night. It is important to note that we do not recommend the use of retinol products during the day, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
